From the Vintner

“Usually, to make a good wine you must have a good grape and that good grape grows here in our village of Areni, which is very famous. Its wild species has been cultivated since ancient times in the gorge of Noravank. For example, the villagers here in Areni really enjoy winemaking, including, myself and as you can taste the wine, it's a very tasty wine.

Usually, the quality of wine is determined by the number of sunny days in one year and our Village Areni is very sunny, almost 300 sunny days in one year. For example, there are many stories connected with wine that it is a holy drink or a mystery drink, there is one very honored winemaker in our village and when you enter his wine cellar and if you speak a little louder, he says to be quiet since the wine is sleeping. Maybe it might sound like something right out of a fantasy or there might be some truth to it but anyways there are many things connected with wine and many traditions. Let me tell you a story of one joking person that told that wine is a vitamin for brain. I also have a story connected to myself, once I wanted to measure the plot of land of our house. At first, I did not have any clue how to do it but after 3 glasses of wine later it struck me, and I used newtons law to do it, though it does not mean that drinking too much wine will make you mathematician or a physician but nonetheless little wine never hurts anyone. I always say there are three things that you must have control over, its wine, soldiers and wives. There is also a saying that you can resolve world issues either with a glass of wine or by being in bed.

Please taste the wine, you can also taste the one made of wild grapes, but unfortunately, we don’t have much of it since, not only do we try to collect it but also nature, most notoriously the bears.

As said before to make a good wine a good grape is needed and a strong, kind spirit. Also, the container plays a big role since you must know when to put it in and when to get it out. We have traditions for it since it's not only leaving it in the container and resting it for a time, but you have also check on it every day, constantly, and you have to know about the right time to take it out of the container. You can get the timing by its color and by its taste but there are also secrets that I don’t want to reveal.

In conclusion what does it take to make good wine simple, good spirit, good mood and good surroundings.  All of these guarantees you a good wine.”
